The subject of ADHD and corresponding medical stimulant treatment options is a big controversial issue for parents. Are these young people invariably headed towards substance abuse and drug dependency?

ADHD, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is characterized in terms of difficulty in paying attention, sitting still or being able to focus on the task at hand. Moreover, an individual who has this condition tends to show inattention, unusual hyperactivity and impulsivity in day to day life.
Studies show how patients with ADHD are more prone to drug and substance abuse later on in their lives as compared to the general populace. What's surprising is that a significant percentage of ADHD-afflicted individuals may have symptoms that point to autism spectrum disorder, or now known simply as autism.
What is Autism? 
Individuals who have ASD encounter early developmental issues that limits their overall capacity to do things on their own, or to understand the nuances of social practices. These individuals will have problems communicating with people and tend to do things in a repetitive manner. 
Research has found that young people who are diagnosed with either autism or ADHD have a higher likelihood to engage in smoking habits and use some types of cannabis.
